Whittier North Carolina

The town quickly grew and by 1913, Whittier had a dry goods store, hotel, three churches, a school, sawmills, lumberyards, and a resident physician and surgeon. Several historical buildings still stand and are in use. Whittier isn't all about tourism; it's all about the community and the folks who call it home. Whittier is just a whistle stop on an old rail-line, modest in so many ways, yet charming in its own character.

One special feature Whittier has to offer is its Holiday Lights and yearly visit from the Polar Express. The bold and colorful lighting and decorations stretch around town and are highly visible from upper Hwy 74. Quiet, quaint, and pleasing...that's Whittier.

The town of Whittier is an access point for the Nantahala Byway, a short and scenic drive along the Tuckasegee and Oconaluftee Rivers. This scenic route driving tour is a pretty, laid-back, and leisurely journey thru the countryside with no narrow river gorge to maneuver or mountain to scale, just a nice evening drive.

Farther up the road from the town of Whittier along Hwy 74 in Whittier Township is a business district with a large flea market, cabin rental company, and outdoor river adventure company.
